About fictio

fictio is an AI character chat and roleplay platform at fictio.ai, created by Chutes, the decentralized, serverless inference platform for open-source AI models.

On fictio you create AI characters, worlds and interactive experiences, then chat with them in branching conversations using the newest open-source models. Your chat messages are encrypted on your device.

What you can do on fictio

Start from a community character or an experience, or build your own.

  • Characters

Write characters with a bio, personality, scenario, example dialogue, multiple greetings and an optional custom system prompt. Keep them private or publish them, and invite collaborators to edit with you.

  • Branching chats

Every conversation is a message tree. Rerolling a reply creates a new branch, and you can switch between branches at any time. Long chats get automatic summaries, and characters can keep memories.

  • Group chats

Put 2 to 6 AI characters in one scene and play it out together.

  • Experiences

Packaged interactive scenarios (adventures, roleplays, games, stories and simulations) with their own custom HTML and CSS pages.

  • Lore

Reusable world-building entries that trigger always, by keyword, or manually, organized into collections.

  • Plugins

Simple plugins are visual rules. Advanced plugins are JavaScript hooks that run server-side in a sandbox.

  • Personas, prompts and rules

Choose who you are in a chat with personas, shape how the model writes with system prompts, and set your own character rules. Template tags such as {{user}} and {{char}} fill in names for you.

  • Custom styling

Style character pages and your profile with full HTML and CSS, and customize card colors, fonts, borders and glow.

  • Studio and voice

Generate images from text or from another image, turn images into video, and listen to replies with text-to-speech.

  • Ember

fictio's AI assistant for building characters and other content.

  • Published chats

Publish a chat as a transcript that other people can read.

Built by Chutes

fictio was created by Chutes, and fictio's platform, branding and technology belong to Chutes. Chutes announced “fictio by Chutes” on January 6, 2026.

In its own words, Chutes is:

“a decentralized, serverless inference platform for open-source AI models”
“the leading open-source, decentralized compute provider for deploying, scaling and running open-source models in production”

Chutes runs on Bittensor subnet 64, and every model in its catalog currently runs in a trusted execution environment (TEE). Every AI reply, image, video and voice clip on fictio is generated on Chutes.

AI models

fictio uses the full live Chutes catalog of open-source language models, including Qwen, DeepSeek, Kimi, GLM, Gemma, Mistral and Nemotron models. You can switch models in the middle of a chat, and new open models arrive shortly after release. Studio image generation (text-to-image and image-to-image), image-to-video and text-to-speech also run on Chutes.

Privacy and encryption

Your chat messages and chat summaries are encrypted on your device and stored as ciphertext, so fictio can't read your stored messages. Images in your chats, persona avatars and Studio creations are locked with a key only you hold, so fictio can't read them either; images you put on public characters, your profile or a published chat use a shareable key so others can see them. When you publish a chat, fictio stores a readable copy of that transcript so others can open it.

To generate a reply, the conversation is sent to the selected model for inference on Chutes. Every model in the Chutes catalog currently runs in a trusted execution environment (TEE), and the Chutes privacy policy says: “We do not log, store, or persist the content of your API requests or responses.”

fictio's termssay: “We don't train AI on your content or sell your data.”
